Blackboard Login Help

This is a check list that contains common known problems and trouble shooting tips associated with the Jones College Blackboard Login Procedure. The trouble shooting tips contained on this page are intended for the latest version of Internet Explorer and with Windows 98 or later operating systems. We have found that students experience the least amount of problems using the latest version of Internet Explorer and the latest version of Windows operating system. Visit http://www.microsoft.com for all of their latest downloads and patches.

Remember to always let your instructor know at the first onset of trouble! This way they are more likely to be lenient if you happen to fall behind and they may even be able to help with your problem! If you cannot contact your instructor, Click Here for our school contact list.

Account Setup:

If you recently registered for class, it usually takes a minimum of 24 hours to set up your account. If you registered for the class on Friday, it may take until Tuesday before you can log in. This is only applicable if the semester has started. The student orientation class will be available to all actively enrolled Jones College Blackboard students one week prior to the start of each semester. All of the assigned Jones College Blackboard courses become available to the actively enrolled Jones College Blackboard students, at the start of each semester. No student will be allowed access to their class(es) before the semester starts! To view the College calendar with the list of semester start dates, Click Here

What is Your Blackboard ID?

The student's Blackboard ID (user ID) will be the first letter of their first name followed by their last name; with no capitol letters, spaces, hyphens, or special characters. Example: "William Smith" would be "wsmith" and "Ronald McClain&" would be "rmcclain". All student Blackboard ID's are created on a first come first serve basis. In cases where we have more than one student with the same Blackboard ID, there will be a number attached to the last part of the student's Blackboard ID. Example: "William Smith" would be "wsmith1" and "Ronald McClain" would be "rmcclain1". If you suspect that this is your problem, try to login with the number "1" attached to last part of your Blackboard ID. You may want to try the number "2" but because this is not that common of an issue, I would not go much higher then this. To verify whether or not this is the case you can contact your Instructor or the Dean's office. Note: If you are attending classes on ground and on line, your Blackboard ID and password will be different from your College user name and password.

What is Your Password?

Unless you have already reset your password, your password is your full social security number with dashes. Example: Password = "###-##-####". International students that do not have a social security number will be assigned a six digit Foreign ID number by the college.

The first time you login you are required to change your password! The first time that you login to the Jones College Blackboard program you will be taken to a page titled "Password Settings" this is where the Blackboard program will ask you for your old password, your new password and to confirm your new password. Even though the password (the last four digits of your social security number or the one that was assigned to you) that was given to you when you signed up for class is new to you, as far as the program is concerned, it is the old one and the one that it is asking for.

On the page titled "Password Settings" follow these instructions:

  • Input your old password (the last four digits of your social security number or the one that was assigned to you).
  • Input the new password (this is the one that you will create).
  • Confirm your new password.
  • Click on the text titled "Update password".
  • You will then receive a confirmation page stating "Success: Your password has been updated".
  • On the "Confirmation Page" click on the text titled "Continue" and then you will be taken back to the Login page where you will input your Blackboard ID, the new password that you have just created and click on the "Login" button.

Password Hint Feature! After you have successfully updated your password you will be taken to your "My Blackboard" page. When this page first opens a small window is displayed in the center of the screen that asks you to set up a password hint, we strongly recommend that you do this.

Note: In the event that you forget your password and you do not set up the password help feature, it can take up to one full working day (24 hours) to have your password reset. If this takes place on a Friday, it could be until Tuesday of the following week before you could login!

Forgot Your Password?

There are two ways to reset your password. If you entered an e-mail address and a password hint you may Click Here to go to the automated password reset page.

If you did not enter a hint and e-mail address or are unsure send an e-mail to webctpwd@jones.edu containing your login ID, first name, last name and the last 4 digits of your SSN for verification (Note: We cannot reset your password unless ALL of this information is included in the e-mail). Please allow 1-2 business days for passwords to be reset. Once the password has been reset you will receive the new password at the address you sent your request from.

Caps Lock:

This is a simple mistake that a lot of people make so verify that when you are trying to login, the "Caps Lock" function on your keyboard is set to the off position. The Jones College Blackboard Login Script is Case Sensitive!

Financial Block:

If you can access the Jones College Blackboard program but you are denied access to your courses, check and make sure that you are in good standing with the Jones College Financial Department. Students may be denied access to their Online Learning Blackboard on line classes, if they have defaulted on their student loans or tuition fees. If you suspect that this could be your problem, contact your Instructor or the Jones College Financial Department. You can also send an e-mail to financialaid@jones.edu to verify your account status.

The Blackboard program is asking for an Access Code:

Some courses within the Jones College Blackboard program, require that an Access Code be purchased from the course publisher. An Access Code is a series of letters and numbers that allow you to access the course content, called an e-Pack, that has been selected by your Instructor or the College. Student course Access Codes are often confused with Blackboard ID's and Passwords, but they are not the same. For more help and information on how to purchase Access Codes Click Here.

Why am I having problems using the AOL browser to connect to my Blackboard?

Because it is limited in the way it handles Javascript. The AOL browser is not thoroughly supported for use with Blackboard. Using an AOL browser may cause difficulties for you when you try to access your classes. Note: You can still use AOL as your Internet Service Provider (ISP), just follow these instructions:

  • Log on to your AOL account as usual.
  • Close out all but the main AOL window (Browser) and then minimize (do not close) the main AOL window (Browser).
  • Start the Internet Explorer browser (if you do not have it Click Here to download it for free).
  • Go to the Blackboard Login page on the Jones College web site and follow the login instructions.

Browser Type:

You may have an incompatible browser! Blackboard works best with the latest version of Internet Explorer or Firefox with Java and cookies enabled. In most cases as long as Java and cookies are enabled, Blackboard is backward compatible to Internet Explorer version 4.0. There are a few versions of the Netscape browser that are compatible. To find out which browsers work the best go to: http://www2.blackboard.com/tuneup

Reboot:

This sounds simple but a lot of times it is over looked and a lot of times it works! Completely close all windows (programs), log off of the Internet and turn off your computer. Do not choose to restart the computer, instead switch it off and let it set for at least three minutes. This should clear any cache that your ISP (Internet Service Provider) may hold. Restart your computer, log back on to the Internet, and then see if you can access your classes. The Blackboard chat rooms run within a Java Applet and sometimes when they do not function correctly all that is needed is a simple reboot!

If the last time that you logged in, everything in your Jones College Blackboard classrooms worked great, but now it does not:

This could be a "Software Conflict" problem. Check and make sure that during this time you or someone that has access to you computer has not installed any new software. If this is the case you could be experiencing "Software Conflict".
How to resolve this problem:

  • Make sure that your computer is turned on, you are on your desktop and no other programs are running.
  • Click on the Windows "Start" Button (located in the bottom left corner of your screen).
  • From there go to "Settings" and then "Control Panel".
  • In "Control Panel" click on the icon titled "Add/Remove Programs".
  • In the window that opens scroll through and verify all of the programs that are installed on your computer. If you see any programs that you do not recognize, then you may want to uninstall them.
  • Use your mouse to highlight the program and then depending on which version of Windows that you have, click on the button titled "Add and Remove", "Install Uninstall", or "Change Remove". Then follow the instructions on the screen. Sometimes you may need to restart your computer before the changes will take effect.
  • To learn more on how to do this refer to the "Help" section of Windows or visit www.microsoft.com.

Software Conflicts:

For a list of known software that conflicts with the Blackboard program go to the Search Dr.C portion of the Blackboard corporate web site and do a search on the words "software conflict" or "conflicting software". Most of the software conflict problems that students encounter are from Internet file sharing programs and the so called free downloadable programs that are all over the web. Even some of the Screen Saver and Cursor programs can cause problems. Some of these programs are known to have trojan or hidden "Spyware" programs written inside of them.

Spyware:

"Spyware" is a name that was given to a type of software that without the user of the program knowing, sends information to a computer or server somewhere on the Internet. By performing these actions, detailed user profiles and tracking the user's Internet usage, can be collected, without the user's knowledge and approval. This information can then be used for commercial or other purposes and even sold to less then ethical advertising agencies. Have you ever wondered why certain e-mail advertisements keep showing up in your e-mail? Not only is the gathering and sending of this information an invasion of privacy but the resources on the user's computer as well as bandwidth on the Internet are abusively used.

Pop Up Window Killer:

We all hate those pesky little Pop Up Ads that show up on so many web sites these days; so what do we do about them? Well for the time being if we want to access our Blackboard classrooms, there is not much that we can do about them. Most of the programs and fire walls that are designed to stop these Pop Up Ads could also keep you from seeing some or all of your Blackboard classroom activities. Most of these pop up ads use JavaScript to execute them and the Blackboard program uses JavaScript for many of its functions. Any program that you install on your computer that modifies your computer's JavaScript settings could also cause you problems with Blackboard.

If the downloading, collecting and installing of programs and files is what you like to do for a hobby, then you will have the best results if you do this with a computer other than the one that you use for your Jones College Online Learning Blackboard classes!
